Municipal Council of Patras: “No to the monstrous wind turbines in the Gulf of Patras”

The Municipal Council of Patras unanimously approved a resolution against the installation of the monstrous offshore wind farm in Patraikos, submitted to the House by the People’s Rally.

The resolution states the following:

“Governments over time, based on the directions of the E.U. and guided by the interests of the energy groups, they loaded the mountains and slopes with wind turbines and the arable lands with photovoltaics.

Now, the time has come for the exploitation of the sea as well.

The development plan for floating and fixed base offshore wind farms includes 25 offshore areas with a total capacity of 12.4 GWh. While already 60% of the electricity in our country comes from RES, i.e. supposedly free energy from the sun and the wind, the electricity bills are unbearable for the popular family.

On the other hand, within five months 380 were rejected GWhcorresponding to the annual consumption of 60,000 households.

By 2030, in the name of the “green transition”, the installed power of RES will reach approximately 30 GWh, many times more than the required for the internal demand, so that Greece becomes the supplier of the E.U. and the countries supported by the E.U. in the world competitions and military confrontations, such as Ukraine, etc.

In the Gulf of Patras, from Antirrio, Nafpaktos, to Rio, a giant “offshore” wind farm is to be installed, according to the government’s plans.

More than 50 huge wind turbines with a total capacity of 695 MW will be installed very close to the coastline, i.e. in residential areas and swimming beaches, as they will be permanently installed. These are added to a particularly burdened area, with installed and licensed wind turbines on the surrounding mountains and slopes of the Gulf of Patras.

The boundaries of the offshore wind farm of Patraikos are close to water bodies and in contact with the Lagoon Parks of Messolonghi. It will have serious impacts on the habitats of protected marine species and the general ecosystems of the bay, as well as fisheries. The demarcated area of the Patraikos wind farm is surrounded by Natura land areas and is very close to Corinthiakos, which has been included in the Natura protected areas.

Energy should be a social good and it is necessary to utilize all sources of energy production, including RES, designed based on popular needs and environmental protection and not for the profits of energy groups.

All governments in turn have formulated a legislative framework to ensure the high profitability of RES operating businesses at the expense of the environment. With the specific laws it is possible to install wind turbines near residential areas or even in protected areas, causing huge problems to the residents and degrading the environment. This policy, along with market liberalization and the energy exchange, is leading to skyrocketing electricity bills, increasing energy poverty, and power cuts to homes and small businesses.

The predatory raid on the tarnished income of workers and small professionals is not a “distortion” that Mr. Mitsotakis tells us, but is at the core of his policy and of all governments throughout time and the nature of the social system dominated by the few.

The Municipal Authority of Patras, together with the residents’ organizations, prevented the installation of wind turbines very close to settlements of our Municipality such as Platani, Tseleika, Rodini, Sella and Ano Ziria, as well as in Erymanthos.

The government to withdraw its plans, which include the installation of giant wind turbines in the Gulf of Patras, with the criterion of increasing the profits of the energy entrepreneurs, without considering the effects on the lives of the local residents and the environment.

We call on the people of Patras, but also of the other Municipalities of the region, with their organization and their mobilizations to block the installation of the Offshore Wind Park in the Gulf of Patras.

We claim:

  • No development of floating or fixed base Offshore Wind Farms (OWF) in the Gulf of Patras.
  • The natural wealth of our region should not be handed over to business groups.
  • To ensure essential protection of the environment and the natural wealth of the region.
  • Repeal anti-environmental laws and related provisions that allow energy investments for the interests of the few.
  • Abolish the energy exchange. Cheap electricity for ordinary households, no power outages for working-class families, small professionals and farmers”.
