In addition, there were around 36 tons of waste that were swept up in the surrounding streets during and after the largest folk festival in the world, the city administration said. At last year’s Oktoberfest, employees collected 91 tons of garbage on Theresienwiese – but back then the festival lasted two days longer.

In order to quickly remove the unpleasant traces left by Oktoberfest visitors, the street cleaners worked extra shifts – and used 1.8 million liters of water to clean the open spaces on the festival grounds alone. However, most of the waste ended up in the designated buckets and containers. By the end of the festival with an estimated 6.7 million visitors on Sunday evening, the municipal waste management company had disposed of 922 tons of waste from Theresienwiese – including 750 tons of residual waste and 100 tons of mixed glass.
