MUNICH – Munich Airport is selling the majority of the cargo handler Cargogate to CHI Cargo.

Cargogate Munich Airport GmbH (Cargogate) was founded in 1974 and provides freight services at Munich Airport as a wholly owned subsidiary of Flughafen München GmbH (FMG).

As a regulated agent, Cargogate handles all tasks that arise from the warehouse on an area of around 17,000 square meters – including the acceptance, sorting, installation and handover of the freight as well as customs and dangerous goods formalities.

In order to “strengthen air freight at Munich Airport”, CHI Aviation Handling GmbH, as part of the CHI Cargo Group, will acquire 74.9 percent of the shares in Cargogate, Munich Airport announced. “FMG retains the remaining 25.1 percent of the shares, thereby establishing a future-oriented strategic partnership with proven freight expertise and a large customer network.”

The CHI Group currently offers freight forwarding and airline handling as well as other related activities at Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Hamburg and Amsterdam airports for well-known international companies and is expanding its portfolio to include airline handling at Munich Airport.

The joint venture will initially continue to operate under its current name. The common goal is the sustainable further development of Munich Airport and a significant strengthening of the freight business and volume. “The jobs of around 150 employees have been contractually secured,” assured the airport. The takeover of the shares in January 2025 is subject to official approval.

“I am pleased that with CHI we were able to gain a strong strategic partner for our cargo subsidiary Cargogate in order to jointly advance cargo development at Munich Airport,” said Jost Lammers, CEO.
