Kelly heather’s journey is a poignant reminder that life can take unexpected turns, even when hope seems to be blooming. Just months after celebrating seven years of remission from melanoma, a diagnosis she’d first received in 2017, a new chapter began.
Her joy at the finding of pregnancy in April 2024 was quickly overshadowed by fear and uncertainty. At 35 weeks pregnant, Kelly suffered a sudden seizure, a terrifying experience that led to a devastating diagnosis: a brain tumor.
“I was told so manny times I was cancer-free, or that it wouldn’t spread,” Kelly shared, her voice trembling with emotion. “I tried to push for more scans, but I was told no. I wish I had been a more persistent patient.”
Her initial cancer diagnosis had been stage zero, considered non-spreadable. Despite her pleas for further tests, Queen Victoria Hospital declined her request. An oversight that would have profound consequences. Two years later, the unwelcome discovery of a lump in her armpit revealed the cancer had metastasized to her lymphatic system. She underwent surgery to remove 20 lymph nodes, facing a terrifying ordeal while pregnant.
Now, facing the possibility of not being there for her children, Kelly is resolute to share her story, hoping to prevent others from experiencing the same heartbreak. “If I can help just one person get diagnosed earlier, that would be worth it,” she says resolutely.
Kelly’s message is a powerful call to action for anyone with a history of cancer. “Carry out more tests if you are at any stage of cancer,” she pleads, her voice filled with urgency. “Don’t let your concerns be dismissed. Advocate for yourself and your health.”
Kelly’s story serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proactive healthcare. While medical professionals hold a vital role, patients must also be their own advocates, proactively seeking thorough care and persistently voicing their concerns. By sharing her experience, Kelly aims to empower others to take control of their health, urging them to fight for their well-being and potentially avert a similar tragedy.
Just a year ago, Kelly’s story was one of triumph. After a grueling battle with immunotherapy at Maidstone Hospital, her scans revealed promising results. By April 2024, she was officially in remission. It was a victory hard-won against a disease that had threatened to consume her. Kelly was ready to embrace a new chapter, excited about becoming a mother once again.
But fate, it seems, had a different plan.
As Kelly prepared for motherhood, a new worry emerged, one far more frightening than the cancer she’d already conquered. While battling cancer had been a consuming experience, the fear of recurrence now loomed like a constant shadow. “I asked for another scan, but they refused,” Kelly admitted, her voice tinged with both frustration and fear. “They said I was stage zero, it shouldn’t be a problem.”
Her journey began with hope, a seemingly routine pregnancy. Despite initial reassurances, a hidden danger lurked. Diagnosed with stage zero melanoma, kelly felt confident, believing the threat had been eradicated. But this was not to be. “My leg started flicking out and shaking uncontrollably,” Kelly recalled, describing the terrifying moment reality shattered. “Within not even a minute, I was having a full seizure in the kitchen. I honestly thought I had died. I thought I was dying, and all I could think was my kids have lost their mum and my baby is going to die. It’s one of the most traumatic things I’ve ever gone through,” she confessed.
This seizure was a chilling prelude to a devastating diagnosis: stage four melanoma brain cancer. Despite the grim prognosis,Kelly’s strength shone through. Steadfast in her determination to meet her newborn, she gave birth to her fourth child,Te-Jay,via c-section on December 9th of last year. Ten days later, she underwent brain surgery, facing the daunting reality of her illness head-on.
“They removed most of the tumor, but they couldn’t remove all of it without causing permanent paralysis to my left side. so, a small part was left behind, which is why I have to have the targeted radiotherapy to kill the remaining tumor left in the brain,” Kelly explained, her voice laced with both determination and vulnerability.
Facing the unknown, Kelly bravely embraces immunotherapy, clinging to the 50 percent chance of success. “I don’t think I’ve fully accepted that I have terminal cancer,” she confessed, her honesty resonating with raw emotion. Yet, amidst the darkness, Kelly finds solace in her children: Preston, 17, Brendan, 15, Rhea, 7, and te-Jay. Their presence fuels her fight, reminding her of the precious moments worth cherishing.
Driven by a fierce desire to advocate for others, Kelly passionately urges, “I am pushing for further testing to be given nonetheless of what stage you are at.No mum should ever have to be in that situation.”
Kelly’s story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. Her unwavering determination, coupled with her unyielding love for her family, shines through the darkness. It is indeed a testament to the power of hope, even in the face of unimaginable challenges.
