Mumbai: 14 killed as billboard falls in storm

At least 14 people were killed and dozens injured following a huge billboard fell in the city during the storm in the financial capital of India, Mumbai.

A billboard fell on some houses and a petrol station along a busy road in the eastern suburb of Ghat Koper late on Monday following strong winds and rain fell, British news agency Reuters reported.

Rescue operations continued till Tuesday morning as several people were trapped following the billboard collapsed.

According to the Mumbai Police, the fallen billboard measured 70 by 50 meters (230 feet by 164 feet). The Maharashtra government has ordered a high-level probe into the incident.

The severe storm not only disrupted traffic flow in some parts of the city but also affected flight schedules at the country’s busiest airport.

French news agency AFP quoted Indian media as saying that at least 15 flights were diverted to other airports due to the strong storm.

According to the Municipal Corporation of Mumbai, at least 74 people were injured following the accident and were taken to the hospital and 31 of them were discharged from the hospital under first aid.

Mumbai was lashed by rain and dust storms last Thursday, which uprooted several trees and caused brief power outages in parts of the city, as well as disrupting the train network.
