While the rumor regarding a new Nintendo Switch has been circulating for years, new elements confirm its existence and even more, its upcoming launch.

News : present at the largest European exhibition dedicated to video games, Gamescom, Nintendo would have taken the opportunity to unveil its new console to a few hand-picked insiders.

Several anonymous sources have in fact affirmed to the serious media Eurogamer – information confirmed by the media VGC – that several developers had the chance to approach the Nintendo Switch 2.

The detail : this first unofficial presentation suggests that the console might be released soon. The rumors in the corridors point to the end of 2024. A little more patience, therefore.

Power at the rendezvous

According to various testimonies, Nintendo mainly demonstrated the graphics performance of its new console – an aspect that the Switch has always lacked, especially since the appearance of new consoles. This is a question of compatibility with Unreal Engine 5, namely the graphics engine most used by third-party developers and publishers. THE ray tracing would be there. This technology makes it possible to emulate the path of light and its interactions with the environment, for example the reflections of the sun in water. The Nintendo Switch 2 – unofficial name – would support Nvidia’s DLSS technology which aims to improve console performance in-game, even when high settings are enabled, thanks to AI.

Other more technical aspects:

The console would keep an LCD screen to limit production costs.

Its storage space would be increased, allowing the installation of more games at once or simply larger titles. An essential aspect to benefit from the best graphics performance.

Nintendo’s tranquility called into question?

The first Nintendo Switch of the name dates from 2017. A more affordable lightweight version, the Switch Lite, was introduced in 2019. Two years later, this a slightly boosted version – at least, in terms of display – which made its appearance, the Nintendo Switch OLED. But more than six years following its release, Nintendo’s hybrid console still has no worthy successor.

Unlike Sony or Microsoft, Nintendo did not take part in the console war by delivering a new generation. The Japanese manufacturer has come a long way on its own. It must be said that the Switch still remains particularly popular today, despite the passing years. It has also seen a resurgence of interest during the coronavirus pandemic. This probably explains why Nintendo was in no hurry to release a new generation of console. The Japanese giant is rather known for exploiting its veins to the core. Just look at the multiple suites of its video game licenses. However, the proliferation of portable consoles, including the Steam Deck, the Asus Rog and Legion Go, might well have changed the situation for Nintendo. The manufacturer now faces greater competition in its niche, what motivates it to take the second step to release a new console? Highly possible.
