Foreign media Vice pointed out that someone shared the OpenAI GPT-4 API key in the Discord group r/ChatGPT, saying that the key was stolen from the code of Repl.it users, and the affected OpenAI account continued to be deducted .

According to reports, a user named Discodtehe widely promoted the free use of GPT-4 in the Discord group r/ChatGPT, and set up a website teaching users to get free GPT-4 gold. The website means that users only need to enter their email address and press the “Invite” button, then click the OpenAI link received from the email, and set the default billing address to “weeeeee” to create a new API key for free use.

Discodehe said in the Discord group in March that he found more than 1,000 open OpenAI GPT-4 API keys from Repl.it, and pointed out on Wednesday (9th) following the incident was exposed that “if you use the free API key If there are enough people, Open AI may not ban everyone.”

Repl.it is an online tool for collaborative programming. Cecilia Ziniti, its general counsel, responded that Repl.it’s project is public by default and provides users with API key processing mechanism Secrets. Cecilia Ziniti said that it is the user’s responsibility to protect their keys stored in Secrets, not public programs.

OpenAI has warned users not to share the key with anyone. Since Discodtehe steals the free API key through Repl.it, the affected Open AI account holders will continue to be deducted by Open AI until the key is revoked by Open AI. After the incident was exposed, it immediately attracted widespread attention from the outside world, and many people also questioned the security of OpenAI and Repl.it.
