Gustavo Petro, president of Colombia, assured that the wave of violence that Ecuador is going through is due to “an anti-drug policy” in the region, which has led to “multinational crime.”
“In America, the expansion of powerful international gangs has to do with a wrong anti-drug policy,” Petro responded on the social network that stood in solidarity with Ecuador.
The president highlighted that “crime today is multinational” and that “the more prohibition, the more profitability of the illicit and the more deadly power of the gangs.”
He also mentioned that “fentanyl changes the global geography of cocaine” and that “Latin American countries must equip themselves with powerful youth empowerment policies that include connectivity, culture and higher education.”
“Explicit and unequivocal support”
The Government of Colombia expressed on Tuesday “its explicit and unequivocal support” for Ecuador. “We are attentive to all the support that the government of Ecuador requests from us,” said Petro.
After the country’s president, Daniel Noboa, decreed a state of emergency and curfew, police kidnappings, car burnings and other attacks were reported on Monday.
Furthermore, on Tuesday, Ecuador experienced another day of violence that left at least eight dead and the takeover of a television channel by an armed group in Guayaquil, among other actions.
