• With new operations in preparation
• A breath of fresh air for the government
SAccording to concordant sources, the World Bank Group notified these days to the Burkinabè government, the resumption of disbursements and the preparation of new operations.
This decision comes following a high-level assessment mission carried out by the World Bank Group in December 2022. During this mission, this important multilateral partner had received from the government the guarantees necessary for the resumption of disbursements and preparing for new operations.
In addition to this reengagement decision and in view of the difficult security and humanitarian situation, the World Bank has undertaken to deal with the greatest requests very quickly disbursement.
In addition to the acceleration and operationalization of the commitments and sectoral actions desired by this partner, it is expected of the government of Burkina Faso setting up a support mechanism to facilitate the execution of projects financed by the World Bank in areas with strong security challenges.
We remember that following the coup of January 24, 2022, a number of multilateral institutions, including the World Bank, had suspended their partnership with Burkina Faso.
The latter restored its activities in May 2022, following its assessment mission and following exchanges by videoconference, between Prime Minister Albert Ouédraogo et the World Bank’s Vice-President for West and Central Africa, Ousmane Diagana, on the evolution of the national situation. These exchanges then focused on the priorities of the ongoing Transition in Burkina Faso and cooperation between the Bretton Woods institution. On this occasion, the World Bank announced the resumption of its commitments with Burkina Faso and the launch of four (04) new operations. We remember that a roadmap had been recommended with the aim of accelerating the implementation of the various projects. The occurrence of the second putsch, on September 30, 2022, had once once more cast doubt on the cooperation between the two partners. Fortunately, the two parties have not broken off the discussions and the actions of development projects and programs might accelerate in the coming months for the benefit of the populations.
In the prospects of According to the World Bank, the Burkinabè economy might recover in the medium term and growth accelerate subject to “a lull in geopolitical tensions at the international level, an improvement in the national security situation and a peaceful socio-political climate”.
