Bournemouth this summer signed a two-year, multi-million pound deal with a little-known betting company called bj88, in a deal the club described as “record-breaking”.
But according to the Daily Mail, the deal has angered his fans, as well as animal welfare activists, after it emerged that BJ88 allows customers to bet on live cockfights, which is illegal in most parts of the world but is permitted in Cambodia.
A cockfight is a bloody fight between two roosters, with blades attached to the roosters’ ankles. Some people take advantage of the hostility between roosters to put them into a fight, and there are usually bets on which rooster wins.
“Cockfighting is a cruel blood sport involving a great deal of cruelty and suffering to animals, which has thankfully been banned for nearly 200 years in the UK,” the League Against Cruel Sports said.
“Bournemouth FC must do the right thing and distance itself from the world of brutal animal fighting and drop any links with companies that promote this cruelty,” she added.
The website, branded as “bj88,” was found to feature live cockfighting videos, with links to home pages that offered the opportunity to bet on cockfights.
“We urge the club to come out publicly and explain its understanding of BJ88’s activities, particularly as they will be our front shirt sponsor for the next two seasons,” Bournemouth supporters’ organisation The Cherries Trust said in a statement.
