The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) welcomed Muhammadiyah’s plan to receive a mining business permit (IUP). MUI only advised that mining management not have a negative impact on the environment.

“The most important thing is not to damage the environment. The environment must be maintained,” said MUI General Chairman Anwar Iskandar in Jakarta, Thursday (25/7).

Anwar also advised that mining management should not harm the surrounding community. On the contrary, the existence of the mine should provide welfare.

“Don’t make the people around the mine poor,” he explained.

In addition, the MUI considers it legitimate for religious organizations to receive IUP. The reason is, the government provides it as a reward for helping to realize an independent Indonesia.

Previously, the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership (PP) gave a signal that it would accept the IUP. However, the official decision will be conveyed to the public after the national consolidation meeting.

Article 83A paragraph 1 states, in order to improve community welfare, the Special Mining Business Permit Area (WIUPK) can be offered on a priority basis to Business Entities owned by religious community organizations.
