Mudslide buried house in Zell am See: resident seriously injured

The rubble entered a house and hit the resident. Rescuing the injured person was extremely difficult, according to the Zell am See fire department.

At first there was no way through at all, the access road was blocked by masses of rubble, reported the fire department. The emergency doctor had to be brought to the injured person in a Unimog truck. In total, eleven fire departments with more than 260 helpers were on duty in Salzburg during the night. The focus was on Pinzgau, with Kaprun and Zell am See particularly affected, and most of the debris had to be cleared away. The emergency services still had their hands full in the morning.

Critical situation in Kaprun

In Kaprun the situation was “very critical,” reported Mayor Domenik David (SPÖ). The fire brigade had to clear traffic routes, pump out flooded buildings and redirect various streams back into their stream beds. There were several landslides on the Schaufelberg, and access to the reservoirs and the glacier railway was blocked. The rubble barriers were already quite full after storms a few days ago and now had to be emptied, said the mayor. Two houses on the Schaufelberg are currently cut off from the outside world and their water supply is threatened; an alternative solution is being worked on. No injuries were reported in Kaprun.

In the municipality of Niedernsill, a mudslide buried Mittersiller Straße (B168) during the night. No one was injured and buildings were spared. The fire brigade has now cleaned the road and made it passable again.
