French Open finalist Karolina Muchova and Sorana Cirstea have reached the quarterfinals of the US Tennis Open. The 27-year-old Czech defeated the Chinese Wang Xinyu in the round of 16 on Sunday in 2:34 hours with 6:3.5:7.6:1 and now meets Cirstea. The 33-year-old Romanian defeated the Swiss Olympic champion Belinda Bencic 6:3,6:3 and is in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time since the French Open in 2009.

Muchova gave up a set for the first time in the tournament. “I’m glad it’s over. It’s pretty warm today,” said the world number ten at more than 30 degrees.

In the men’s competition, Ben Shelton surprisingly made it into the quarterfinals. The 20-year-old won the US duel with Tommy Paul 6:4.6:3.4:6.6:4. Shelton is in the main draw of the US Open for only the second time. At the Australian Open this year, he surprisingly reached the quarterfinals – and was eliminated there against Paul. “I learned from this game to be mentally strong,” said Shelton, enthusiastic about the atmosphere at the home tournament. “It’s hard to believe I’m playing to a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium. God works miracles.”
