MTV Awards Ceremony: Coveted Trophy for Taylor Swift

Pop star Taylor Swift won the most prestigious award at the MTV Video Music Awards and then caused a surprise. The rapper Nicki Minaj received the honorary award – in memory of Michael Jackson.

Pop star Taylor Swift has won the coveted trophy for video of the year at the MTV Video Music Awards. The 32-year-old singer also won the Best Director and Best Feature Music Video awards for her song “All Too Well.”

At the end of her acceptance speech, Swift provided a surprise: “I thought it would be a fun moment to share that my new album is coming out on October 21st,” Swift said. She later revealed the name of her new work via social media: It will be called “Midnights” and will tell the “stories of 13 sleepless nights” that are “spread out over my entire life,” Swift wrote.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers won the “Global Icon” award.

“Album of the Year” for Harry Styles

Harry Styles won the Album of the Year award with Harry’s House. He did not take part in the gala because he was giving a concert in New York’s Madison Square Garden at the same time. The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith and John Frusciante took to the stage to perform some of their hits – and pick up the Global Icon award.

Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever” won Song of the Year. Jack Harlow and Lil Nas X scooped multiple trophies including Best Collaboration (“Industry Baby”). Other honorees included Bad Bunny, Dove Cameron, Nicki Minaj, Lizzo and Italian rock band Måneskin.

Rapper Minaj also accepted the honorary Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. MTV said she was honored for her artistry, pioneering hip-hop and global superstar status. The trophy is awarded in memory of video clip pioneer Michael Jackson.

Fans vote online

The music broadcaster MTV awards were presented Sunday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The VMA awards have been presented since 1984. Fans can vote for their favorites online. The trophy is a “Moonman” – a small astronaut on the moon holding an MTV flag.
