BCCI’s tribute to former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who gave India two World Cups in restricted over cricket. A farewell to the magical number 7 which was Dhoni’s jersey number. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the number 7 jersey will no longer be allowed to anyone in the Indian men’s cricket team. As a mark of respect to Dhoni, who led Team India to greater heights, the BCCI has decided that there will be no other heir to the number 7 jersey. Although Dhoni had already announced his retirement from international cricket, the BCCI had not given the number 7 jersey to anyone else until now. Rumors of Dhoni ‘retiring’ the number 7 jersey have been heard for a long time. Dhoni retired from Test cricket in December 2014 and played his last international ODI and Twenty20 matches in 2019. When Dhoni retired, his fans demanded that his number 7 not be given to anyone else. Although the number system will be introduced in Test cricket in 2019, BCCI did not allow anyone else in the seventh Test when Dhoni was in the blue shirt. His teammates Dinesh Karthik, Mohammad Kaif and former women’s team captain Mithali Raj had requested the BCCI in August 2020 to allow Dhoni to retire the number seven jersey.
