MR’s Provocative Poster Campaign: The Battle for Political Messaging in Belgium

2023-12-06 10:05:00

It was expected. By deploying a poster campaign with a Manichaean message, both in substance and form, the MR exposed itself to a backlash. And it didn’t take long. Barely released, the visuals expressing the idea that the French-speaking liberals were alone once morest everyone in the French-speaking political landscape were taken up by the competition to send a contrary message.

“In Wallonia, there are 50 shades of left… and us”: the MR displays itself provocatively in the hot spots of Belgium

The MR emphasizes that the left wants fewer rich people while its troops want fewer poor people? The PS responds with “50 shades of rich”. On the left, we tax the rich, on the right, the “Movement of the Rich” only “protects the rich”. A good-natured response, one might say, to the one who accused them of the “Nap Party”.

The MR denounces the 50 shades of the left? DéFI prides itself on being the party of nuance.

These diversions are reminiscent of the memes that emerged in France when Nicolas Sarkozy launched his “La France Forte” campaign, in 2012. The right-wing candidate, for whom Georges-Louis Bouchez has never hidden his admiration, had unveiled a poster showing him in front of a peaceful sea. This poster had been parodied many times.

It seems that the same phenomenon might occur in Belgium. And we are only at the start of the electoral campaign…

The possibilities are limitless.
