Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs is a drama <미스터 션샤인>It was announced on the 1st that the remains of Mr. Hwang Ki-hwan, who became the motif of the role of the main character ‘Eugene Choi’ in ‘Winter’, will return to their homeland following 100 years.

The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs has been promoting the repatriation of the remains since 2013, but it has been difficult as the cemetery insists that a court decision is needed to destroy the grave without the consent of the bereaved family. The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs filed a lawsuit to return the remains to the local court in 2019 and last year, but has not received court approval so far as there is no public data to confirm that there are no survivors of Mr. Hwang. The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, along with the Consulate General in New York, recently reached an agreement following persuading the cemetery to respond to the wishes of Koreans by returning the remains this year, the 100th anniversary of their martyrdom.

When the remains are repatriated, they will go through a government-sponsored dedication ceremony and be buried at the Daejeon National Cemetery. Hwang will die in his homeland following 100 years of martyrdom.

Born in Suncheon, South Pyongan Province, Mr. Hwang voluntarily enlisted in the US Army while studying in the United States and participated in World War I. After the end of World War I, he did not return to the United States, but moved to Paris, France in June 1919 and joined the Korean mission to the Paris Ganghwa Conference.

In 1919, when Korean workers who had flown to Britain via Russia and the North Sea were in danger of being repatriated to Japan, Hwang persuaded the British government to move 35 of them to France. Hwang passed away in 1923 from a heart attack in New York, USA, while continuing his diplomatic public relations activities in the United States and the United Kingdom. In 1995, the government issued a posthumous patriotic medal for the National Foundation Medal to honor his teacher’s achievements.
