MrLumbia’s progressive government has completed a year of changes. Gustavo Petro was inaugurated as the 34th President of the Republic of Colombia on August 7, 2022. The government has demonstrated its commitment to the people through timely interventions on popular issues. The Colombian people have also reaffirmed their support for the government’s desire for comprehensive change by accepting national development plans. People embraced the slogan of Gustavo Petro’s kingdom as ‘the world power of life’.
Domestic, regional and international factors mark the government’s 12 months of activity. Along with this, it outlines the development to be achieved in the next three years. Farmers, indigenous peoples and poor people became the first priority in Petro regime’s reforms. The slogan of social justice raised by the current administration is once morest the policies of the opposition, which only aimed at fulfilling the wishes of the economic sectors they represent. Reforms related to health, labor and pensions faced some setbacks but are expected to win approval in the legislature.

The reforms suggest structural changes from the neoliberal design. Efforts are being made to bring forward the areas which have been neglected for ages through political intervention. A case in point is that the agricultural sector is recognized with rights. 28,000 hectares of land was purchased as a continuation of the agrarian-rural reform interventions. The law for free higher education was also a dream come true. The dream of many generations who passed without even getting admission in universities has blossomed through this. The “Complete Peace” project is progressing with many changes. Interventions to restart talks with far-left organizations are noteworthy. Also worth mentioning is the inauguration of the National Partnership Commission to enable concrete progress in peace efforts.
A bilateral cease-fire between armed rebel groups and continued peace efforts have ensured that the Total Peace initiative is on the way to success. But the opposition, which continues to want the war to continue and the days of unrest to end, has scorned the peace efforts. Indeed, the elites who grew up occupying positions of power once morest popular will turned their backs on plans for structural change. The dominant media, their vested interests and financial powers have maintained the vanguard of unrest.

As a result, several attempts to destabilize the Petro government continue. They are celebrating the trial of the president’s son, Nicolas Petro, on charges of illegal acquisition and money laundering. These are allegations that the President himself has called for transparency. Attempts by the opposition media to link the allegations to the president have not been successful.

Along with social justice, environmental justice is also counted among the priorities of the government. As a result of the decarbonisation proposal and as part of the ‘Just Energy Transition Plan’ towards clean energy, the government was able to reduce deforestation in the Amazon region by 76 percent. It helped the government to encourage innovative ideas. The proposal to transfer money to countries in the region for climate action and the completion of the Amazon Treaty proposals from the framework of the Leticia Amazon Summit has strengthened. Proposals for an Amazonian court of justice for environmental crimes and a scientific research center were also raised at the last Amazon summit. The Colombian government also highlighted the importance of reopening borders and re-establishing diplomatic relations. He also took the initiative to strengthen Colombia-Venezuela relations.

Colombia played a crucial role in fostering regional cooperation. The regional integration scheme was put forward as a new model of sovereignty. This seemed like a challenge to America. But the failure of their so-called ‘war on drugs’ and the disaster of drug promotion in the region came to light. Regional cooperation and friendship are critical to the defense of Latin America and the Caribbean. Colombia’s call is to open zones of peace beyond NATO’s geopolitical impositions. A political solution to the conflict in Ukraine must be possible. Petro’s call for a national deal has many dimensions. Petro explains that this is not for state benefits, but to lay the fair and stable foundations of democracy. In order to achieve the desired change in the polls, Petro reminds us that the government must take as its goal to realize the social expressions of the common people.
