Mpox: Health confirms that Paraguay remains without cases, but with active surveillance

Asunción, IP Agency.- The Ministry of Public Health reports that so far, the region has no cases of the new monkeypox clade variant. However, in Paraguay surveillance and differential diagnosis continue regarding the risk of admission. It also advises that if rashes appear on the skin, on the genitals or other symptoms, you should immediately go to the doctor.

The head of Health Surveillance, Dr. Andrea Ojeda, pointed out that the cases of monkeypox identified in the State of Paraná, Brazil do not correspond to clade I of the virus that is circulating in the African Region and for which a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

Meanwhile, the case identified in Foz de Iguazú occurred in the month of August, so it is not a new case of the virus. Ojeda clarified that everything recorded in the neighboring country belongs to the previous clade (clade IIb), also detected in the national territory, between the years 2022 and 2023.

The updated Health Surveillance report indicates that so far this year, 42 notifications of suspected Mpox have been reported in the country, of which 4 correspond to the one observed in the last epidemiological week (SE) 41, coming from Ñeembucú, that were also admitted as suspicions of other exanthematous diseases, and highlights that so far, 38 suspicions have been ruled out by the laboratory.

At the moment, no confirmed cases of monkeypox have been identified in Paraguay so far in 2024.

Characteristics of monkeypox

Monkeypox produces skin rashes (similar to pimples or blisters), like other diseases, so it is essential to seek early medical consultation for timely evaluation and diagnosis, and thus prevent the spread of the disease. .

Anyone who has physical or intimate contact with someone who has symptoms or skin rashes caused by monkeypox is at risk of contracting it, so they are urged to take these recommendations into account, such as avoiding close contact, including sexual contact with people with monkeypox or who are suspected of having the disease.

He also states that kissing and hugging a person who has the virus also transmits the disease. It is recommended to wash your hands frequently with soap and water, in addition to not sharing utensils, glasses, mate or tereré, says the health portfolio.
