Faced with the active circulation of the clade 1 Mpox virus in Central Africa and the recent expansion of a subtype known to be more lethal and transmissible (1b) in East Africa, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on Wednesday, August 14, paving the way for enhanced coordination of regional health systems and increased mobilization of all stakeholders to combat this epidemic on an international scale. The following day, Thursday, August 15, Sweden declared the first positive case of clade 1b Mpox on European soil.
In the wake of this, on Friday, August 16, the French government placed the French health system on maximum alert and the French authorities began to reassess the health recommendations established in 2022 during the previous Mpox epidemic in order to prepare for the probable appearance of cases on the national territory.
In these circumstances, the Pasteur Institute is providing its support to the national mobilization.
