MP processes scene 13 days after incidents in San Miguel La Palotada – 2024-07-18 00:11:04

Due to security issues, 13 days later the Prosecutor’s Office processed a scene in which four people were detained and the facilities of the Interinstitutional Operations Center (COI) of San Miguel La Palotada, in San Andrés, Petén, were set on fire, official sources reported.

According to the National Council of Protected Areas (Conap), on July 1 at approximately 5:30 p.m., some 200 people from the Cruce a Dos Aguadas community, located in the Multiple Use Zone of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, “arrived in a violent and aggressive manner at the Interinstitutional Operations Center (COI) of San Miguel la Palotada.”

They stated that on that day, despite the fact that there were CONAP, DIPRONA/PNC and Guatemalan Army personnel at the COl, the protesters “took over the facilities and set them on fire,” during which “the mob detained two CONAP employees and two DIPRONA/PNC agents and they were taken once morest their will to the Cruce a Dos Aguadas community.”

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP), following four people who were being held by community members of the Cruce Dos Aguadas village in San Miguel La Palotada, San Andrés, Petén, were released on July 3, “this day the Petén District Attorney’s Office, in coordination with the IX Regional Attorney’s Office, is processing the scene.”

The MP points out that “the criminal acts were committed once morest the staff of the National Council of Protected Areas (Conap) and the Division of Nature Protection (Diprona) of the National Civil Police, as well as once morest State property in the San Miguel La Palotada camp.”

The prosecution says that the investigation was not carried out on the day of the events due to the level of conflict in the area.

Due to the conflict situation at the scene of the incident, “the inspection was not carried out by the assistant prosecutor who was in charge of the case at the time and, for this reason, it is only being carried out today – July 16.”

“During the investigation, the property was documented as being occupied by personnel from the Guatemalan Army, the National Council of Protected Areas -CONAP- and elements of the National Civil Police of DIPRONA, where different rooms were observed that were burned and in which bedrooms, a warehouse, a kitchen, among others, were located,” said the MP.
