MP denounces French policy intended to ‘undermine decades of friendship’ with Morocco

The deputy Les Républicains (LR-right), Pierre-Henri Dumont, denounced the French policy intended to “systematically undermine decades of friendship” with Morocco, an “essential” partner for Paris, “both in the Mediterranean rim and ‘in Africa”.

“Why does France’s policy aim to systematically undermine decades of friendship with Morocco?” of a session of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly. The deputy LR questioned, for this purpose, the head of diplomacy on the “worst diplomatic crisis” between Paris and Rabat since the 80s.

“I would like to ask you regarding the open diplomatic crisis with one of our most loyal and longstanding partners in Africa, Morocco (…)”, he said, noting that Morocco is “an essential partner (Editor’s note : for France), both around the Mediterranean and in Africa”. “These tensions are not press rumors (…).

It is time to start the de-escalation as soon as possible and it is up to your ministry to act in this direction”, he added. “Do you intend to act to regain a healthy and respectful relationship with Morocco before the President of the Republic has finished scuttling this precious heritage? And if so how?” he continued.

According to him, “there is no smoke without fire. There are factors” that have fueled this crisis. The deputy also pointed to the failure of French policy throughout the African continent. “The LR deputies are particularly worried regarding the fiasco of the policy led by the President of the Republic and his government in Africa.

The President’s recent tour of Africa has, unfortunately, brought to light in a cruel way the results of the policy carried out on the continent for six years”, he noted. He denounced, in this sense, a “policy made up of paternalism, bluster, familiarity, blindness and insolence”. “Wherever he goes, President Macron is damaging our diplomatic relations, weakening the voice of France, and abandoning the Francophonie (…)”, added Mr. Dumont.
