The suicide of this renowned journalist shook Ms. Hernandez 25 years ago.
“It was a shock,” she said. “To see such a great man, so popular, a handsome man leave.”
Our journalist Harold Gagné went to meet this mother, herself in mourning, to collect her touching testimony.
She never thought she would personally experience such a tragedy. However, in June 2022, his worst nightmare came true. His son Vincent took his own life when he was only 22 years old.
“You can’t think that one day your child will have such great pain that he will think regarding that,” she told TVA Nouvelles.
This was not his first suicide attempt. The first happened when Vincent was only 16 years old. The young man had antisocial personality disorder and autism spectrum disorder.
“We needed to cure his soul cancer,” says Ms. Hernandez. “That’s what we had to do.”
The flaws in the health system
Two days before his death, his psychiatrist discharged him from Pierre-Le Gardeur hospital in Terrebonne, despite his mother’s opposition. The doctor considered that he was not in danger.
“I failed in my task as a mother,” she said. “When you are a mother, you protect your child from harm, from others and I did not succeed.”
After the death of her son, Ms. Hernandez explains that she found a note that Vincent had taken the time to write while he was still in the hospital and which demonstrated his distress.
Vincent’s mother kept his medical file and would have liked better collaboration from the nursing staff.
“If someone has a heart attack, they’ll call the family immediately,” she said. “A suicide attempt is radio silence and we don’t talk regarding it.”
She wants the health system to develop suitable centers to save other young people like Vincent. For her, psychiatric units are not suitable.
“Those who are not well, ask for help,” she begs. “I would like there to be no more Vincents taking their own lives, but there are too many.”
