Mourning for 32-year-old Christoforos

The 32-year-old was a member of the club from a very young age. Everyone says they are devastated by the sudden death of Christoforos and they speak of an excellent person, an old and very experienced member who was designated as a leader in many of the trips organized by the club.

Tragic irony, on the 11th of the month, an excursion led by Christoforos Christakis was planned to the Kourtaliotiko gorge, where he finally breathed his last.

The Mountaineering Association of Heraklion, mourning the tragic death of Christoforos, has canceled all planned excursions for August.

Crete: The association’s announcement

“With immense sadness, E.O.S. Heraklion announces the unexpected loss of its member and beloved fellow climber, Christoforos Christakis.

Christoforos participated in the activities of the Mountaineering Association since he was a child. He was a happy, active and giving person, who always offered a lot to the collectives he participated in, since volunteering was an important part of his life.

We are deeply shocked by the fateful circumstance that took Christoforos’ life and deprived his family and all of us of the special young man, the sweet and laughing fellow climber that we loved and were so proud of.

By decision of the Board of Directors of E.O.S. Heraklion, all planned excursions for August in Crete are cancelled.

We express our sincere condolences to his family and share their deepest pain.”

How the tragedy happened

As Creta24 wrotethe 32-year-old was in the canyon with a girlfriend, when his tracks were lost. The girl informed the authorities at approximately 7:00 p.m., when she managed to find a signal on her cell phone and while she had already reached the Preveli lake bridge.

A large operation was immediately set up by the Fire Brigade, Hellas, two EMAK teams from Heraklion as well as a Red Cross team with mountaineering knowledge who were looking for the 32-year-old.

Unfortunately, the man was found dead shortly after 11 at night, plunging his family, friends and the Fire Department, where he served, into mourning.
