Mourning after tragic Czech shooting: More details of bloody attack and killer’s motives emerge

The Czech Republic has declared a national day of mourning following the deadly shooting at Charles University in Prague, the country’s worst in decades.

On Thursday, a 24-year-old student opened fire in the Faculty of Arts (Philosophy) at Charles University, killing 14 people and killing himself. He also injured 25 other people. Police and prosecutors said they had evidence that the shooter had also killed his father earlier on Thursday and a young man and his two-month-old daughter in a forest in Prague on December 15.

The government declared Saturday a day of national mourning. A mass was offered for the dead at St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. The mass, which was open to everyone, was attended by President Petras Pavelas and the Speakers of both Houses of Parliament.

“We are all still in a state of shock in our own way,” said Prague Archbishop Jan Graubner. “We must clearly condemn what happened, but we must also look to the future.”

“No one should be left alone in these difficult moments,” Milena Kraličkova, rector of Charles University, where 14 people were killed in Thursday’s shooting, said at the end of the service.

Similar services were held in other Czech cities, and Christmas markets were closed or shortened in many places. Security in the country has been strengthened.
