In a text published this Friday, the general said that the 1964 coup left “a positive legacy”. Army threatened to punish officers who celebrated coup anniversary
247 – Senator Hamilton Mourão (Republicanos-RS) generated controversy when he praised this Friday the 1964 coup d’état, which exactly 59 years ago installed a military dictatorship in Brazil that killed, tortured and kidnapped hundreds of Brazilians. The information is from Uol.
In an editorial published in the newspaper Correio Braziliense, the general called the period of torture the “Revolution of March 31”. “Attacks on the Armed Forces launched this week on yet another anniversary of the Revolution of March 31, 1964,” he wrote.
In the text, Mourão also says that the 1964 coup left “a positive legacy”. “It is practically impossible not to find the traces and antecedents of the reforms included in that period, which dynamized its society and, mainly, strengthened Brazilian democracy, which, for the first time, had a regime inaugurated without a coup d’état”, he wrote.
Mourão can be framed by the Armed Forces. The army threatened to punish officers who celebrated the anniversary of the military coup.
The commander of the Army, General Tomás Paiva, told interlocutors that soldiers who commemorate the anniversary of the 1964 coup this Friday (31) will be punished; the punishment will also be valid for officers who participate in events organized by reserve military personnel to celebrate the date.
