‘Mountains gave this art’: Kashmiri rock artists

Manzoor Ahmad Butt from Ganderbal district of Indian-administered Kashmir has extracted natural colors from the stones so unique Artwork They create, which leaves the viewer stunned.

Manzoor Ahmad, a resident of Ghazbal village in Ganderbal, started this work at the age of 15 and continued with the art despite difficulties.

According to Manzoor Ahmed, he has been associated with this art for 21 years.

He said: ‘In the beginning when I was collecting stones, my friends laughed and mocked me, but I kept doing my job. I had decided that I have to do something in this work.’

Manzoor Ahmed has no degree in art and drawing. The passion for this art bound his feet to such an extent that he could study only up to the ninth standard. They collect naturally colored stones from different mountains of Kashmir and Ladakh and then extract colors from these stones to create exquisite art pieces.

According to Manzoor: ‘I use my art to express my feelings and connect with others. It takes two to two and a half months to produce a painting. It takes a lot of time to collect stones. It takes a lot of effort to collect stones.

‘It takes weeks of wandering over the mountains to find the color that is needed. The stones have to be collected, washed and then dried. After drying, the lingri has to be ground and only after that I produce the paintings.’

According to Manzoor Ahmed, he has participated in various exhibitions in many parts of the country and has also exhibited his art at the Taj Hotel in Goa and Mumbai.

Although art lovers appreciated Manzoor Ahmed’s art at the exhibitions, it did not bring him much benefit.
