Mountain of Misfortune: A Lymphoma Diagnosis Sends Shockwaves Through the Swiss Alps

The Swiss downhill skier Niels Hintermann is suffering from lymph node cancer and will not take part in any ski races next season. He received the serious findings last Tuesday during standard examinations, Hintermann said at a media event in a Zurich clinic. The disease is in its early stages and he now has two cycles of chemotherapy and probably two weeks of radiation ahead of him.

“That alone takes three months. “The season is over,” said Hintermann, looking forward to a difficult time. But the doctors are confident – not only about the healing process, but also about continuing his career as a ski racer.

“The chances of recovery are very good. “You have it very well under control, even though it is a rare type of cancer,” said Hintermann about an illness that ÖFB team player Stefan Lainer recently successfully battled.

The 29-year-old behind didn’t really get up to speed last season, but won the Kvitfjell downhill at the end of the season – his third success in the World Cup.
