During its work on Thursday, the Government of Wallonia selected three projects to create nature sites dedicated to mountain biking, as part of the Wallonia Recovery Plan.

These three Trails Centers will offer several dozen new permanent mountain bike routes across Wallonia and will benefit from a total subsidy of €2,600,000.

Among them, one is located in the Liège region and will offer nearly thirty new tracks. It will strengthen the mountain bike tourist offer and will be equipped with specific reception infrastructures. It will allow the practice of mountain biking in defined areas and will thus participate in the preservation of nature.

The development of mountain biking in Wallonia has increased in recent years. Today, there are no less than 200,000 Walloon enthusiasts in this field and many amateurs from abroad.

”The creation of Trails Centers, including that of Liège, increases the tourist attractiveness of Wallonia and makes it possible to satisfy new audiences. The Trails Centers, thanks to their location but also to their diversified offer, aim in particular to attract tourists and generate overnight stays. They also participate in the development of local businesses and strengthen the positioning of Wallonia in terms of sports tourism”, specifies the Walloon Minister of Tourism, Valérie De Bue.

Natural characteristics

Concretely, aid of 597,000 euros is granted for the development of a hillside of the Meuse with an industrial past. Established on three sites a few kilometers apart (Liège, Seraing, Neupré), the ardent trail presents an interesting reconversion of a hillside of the Meuse formerly condemned by the industrial activity which unfolded at its feet. The peri-urban location of this project will allow it to be particularly accessible by a large population, whether by train or directly by bicycle.

The desire of the designers is to make maximum use of the natural characteristics of the sites and to make as few modifications as possible. Most of the infrastructure consists of suitable signage, the location allowing the efficient use of underused means (Country Hall car park, existing sports infrastructure, etc.).
