Mount Everest Records Broken: Nepalese Guide Sets 29th Ascent, Briton Climbs 18 Times

Am Mount Everest Two records were set on Sunday: the Nepalese man known as the “Man from Everest” was the first person in the world to defeat it Mountain guide Kami Rita Sherpa the highest peak in the world at 8,849 meters for the 29th time – breaking his own record. The Briton Kenton Cool became the first non-Nepalese to complete the 18th climb. The Nepal Tourism Authority told AFP that both men had reached the summit and set new records.

Kami Rita Sherpa, who grew up in a village in the Himalayas, has been working as a mountain guide for more than 20 years. He climbed Mount Everest for the first time in 1994. Since then he has returned almost every year to accompany mostly foreign mountaineers on their ascent. He also conquered numerous other peaks, including K2, the second highest mountain in the world.

Briton Cool had almost given up his career as a mountaineer in 1996 when he broke both heels in a climbing accident and was told he would never walk unassisted once more. In 2022, he told AFP that the attention he received from his summit climbs “surprised” him. “In truth, it’s not that special,” he added, referring to the many Nepalese Sherpas who had reached the summit countless times before him.
