Among the numerous passengers and tourists who are currently in Sicily is the ORF Carinthia regional director Karin Bernhard. Compared to the ORF she reported of “chaotic” conditions at the airport. She only visited the volcano two days earlier, as she opposite ORF Carinthia says: “It was very stormy and at the top it was very hot. The mountain guides were very nervous and they said that the volcano might erupt again.”

The airlines were still trying to find solutions for the passengers on Sunday. Numerous other Carinthians are stranded with her at the airport.

Etna, more than 3,350 meters high, has been very active so far this year. In February it erupted regularly and sometimes spectacularly.

The falling ash is often a problem for people in the area. In September, the government of Sicily promised the municipalities two million euros in aid for the ash damage.
