Motorola might become the 3rd largest cell phone brand in three years, according to the new goal set by Matthew Zielinski, president of international markets at Lenovo, during an interview released on Thursday (18) by CNBC.
To achieve this, there will be a new strategy with more aggressive investments in the “premium” cell phone segment, which is currently dominated by Apple and Samsung. Zielinski believes that the pillar of his new methods will be a new generation of the Motorola Razr, its foldable “clamshell” cell phone that is available on the market with a focus on a variety of prices.
“I would bet that, in three years, we will be number 3 worldwide”, said the Lenovo executive, reiterating that the company intends to increase its market share geographically, seeking to grow in a “stable” way in the markets where it has the lowest market share until reaching a share close to 10%.
Penetrating the global market podium will not be a simple task for Motorola, since, combined, Apple and Samsung have a share of almost 40% in the segment. Xiaomi, in 3rd place, holds more than 12% of market share. Data from Counterpoint suggest that Motorola and Lenovo together ranked 8th in Q3 2024.
Interestingly, Motorola is already extremely popular in selected markets — specifically in Latin America, a macro-region in which it is the 2nd largest manufacturer. It is estimated that the brand occupies the same position in Brazilsecond only to Samsung, but maintaining a fierce dispute with Apple.
Zielinski didn’t outline a broader strategy during the interview, but considering the goal is short-term, it shouldn’t be long before consumers notice the effects of Lenovo’s future investments in Motorola.
