Motorola launched the Edge 40 in May in Brazil as the most affordable model in the new line of top-of-the-line cell phones. It may not come equipped with a powerful chipset or impressive cameras, but it aims to offer an experience beyond the intermediate models without charging too much for it.
The Edge 40 is more like a successor to the Edge 30 Fusion than the standard Edge 30. Both have similar measurements and even weight. The design has been updated to suit the language adopted in Motorola’s 2023 line, but without leaving aside the curves on the edges that do justice to the family name.
It doesn’t come with the 165Hz display of the Pro variant, but it’s still above the competition with a 120Hz display. It features a 6.55-inch OLED panel with Full HD+ resolution with HDR10+ support. The maximum brightness level is on par with many top-of-the-line phones. There are two sound outputs on the Edge 40. It uses the callout speaker as a secondary channel and delivers great power without distortion at maximum volume.
The Edge 40 is the first cell phone to come equipped with the Dimensity 8020, a new hardware from MediaTek that looks more like a rebranding of the Dimensity 1100. Here we have an octa-core processor and 8 GB of RAM, in addition to the Mali-G77 GPU. It doesn’t quite surpass the Edge 30 in multitasking, but it delivers good performance. Gaming performance does not disappoint.
The 4,400 mAh battery delivers good autonomy and came close to 24 hours in our standardized test. It may not be among the best, but it will do the trick. To help, we have a 68W charger that recharges the battery in just over 40 minutes and with just 15 minutes you’ll already have half of it to use.
The Edge 40 comes with two cameras at the rear: the main one has a 50 MP sensor and the secondary is a 13 MP ultra-wide. The photos captured by the main camera have quality as expected for a cell phone of this size. There’s good sharpness, lots of registered details and saturated colors without being overdone. The 32 MP front registers good selfies in places with adequate lighting and pleases in terms of sharpness, colors and skin tone. Already in dark places we have only decent images for the category.
