Motorola has officially introduced the Edge 30 with a Snapdragon 778G+ chipset and a fast 144 Hz display. The 6.5-inch AMOLED panel has FHD+ resolution, offers 10-bit colors and is HDR10+ certified. Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos are also on board, but there is no mention of tempered glass.
The Edge 30 is inspired by Qualcomm’s current mid-range star, the Snapdragon 778G+, driven. This is an overclocked version of the popular 778G – 0.1GHz boost for the main Cortex-A78 core and a 20% faster Adreno 642L GPU are on the plus side. Motorola combines 8 GB of RAM with 128 or 256 GB of storage that cannot be expanded.
The software used is Android 12 in a fairly pure form. While there are a few Moto mods on board, these are primarily a few extras in the Moto app. The smartphone also comes with Motorola’s Ready For desktop environment. As usual, Motorola doesn’t make any big commitments when it comes to operating system updates.
The Edge 30 features a 50-megapixel main camera with all-pixel autofocus and OIS. Next to it is a 50 megapixel ultra wide-angle camera with a field of view of 118 degrees, which also serves as a macro camera. Both the main and ultrawide cameras can record 4K video at 30 fps and 1080p at up to 60 fps. A telephoto lens like the Edge 20 however, there isn’t. Instead, the last camera on the back is a 2-megapixel depth sensor. On the front is a 32-megapixel selfie camera with pixel binning.
The Edge 30 is smaller than the Pro, so the battery isn’t as big either – but the 4,020 mAh capacity should last a day and a half, according to Motorola estimates. A 33 watt TurboPower charger is part of the scope of delivery. According to Motorola, the thinnest 5G smartphone has a dual SIM slot with 5G connectivity (sub-6 GHz). There’s also a basic IP52 dust and splash resistance rating. Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC are also on board. However, the USB-C cable is only wired for 2.0 speeds, so the Ready For feature must be used wirelessly. Also, there is no 3.5mm headphone jack.
The Motorola Edge 30 has an MSRP of €450 and will be launching “soon” in multiple regions around the world.
