SuisseMotorhomes too heavy to be driven with a car license

Motorhomes are getting overweight, and if they exceed 3.5 tonnes, you need a truck license to drive it. A petition calls for the limit to be increased from 3.5 to 4.25 tonnes.

For such a model, a truck license is required.

DR

Motorhomes and mobile homes are on the rise in Switzerland. In 2000, our country had 22,518 motorhomes and, in 2021, there were already 79,899. The vast majority of them belong to the category of less than 3.5 tonnes, and can be driven with a car driver’s license (permit B).

But these machines are becoming more and more sophisticated and gaining weight. And, if the 3.5 tonne barrier is exceeded, you must pass a heavy goods vehicle license (C1 license). This is all the more so if you are towing a trailer weighing more than 75 kilos. For this, it will be necessary to pass a new permit, which has a cost.

European solution?

Faced with this problem, resistance is organized. The Camping and Caravanning association filed a petition on August 19 with 10,100 signatures. Goal: an increase in the weight limit to 4.25 tonnes, reports the “SonntagsZeitung”.

For now, the same weight rule (3.5 tonnes) applies in many European countries. Initiatives are underway in the European Union to increase the limit. In Switzerland, in addition to the petition from the Camping and Caravanning association, a motion was tabled in Bern for “modern weight restrictions for all motorhomes”.

The intervention was withdrawn following the Federal Council said going it alone would not bring much to Switzerland.
