Little seen in recent years, Franco Morbidelli will leave Yamaha at the end of the season. In 2024, the Italian will be replaced by Alex Rins in the Japanese manufacturer’s team.
In 2024, Fabio Quartararo will be entitled to a new teammate. In effect, Yamaha formalized this Wednesday the departure of Franco Morbidelli at the end of the current season, when his contract was coming to an end. Arrived in 2019 within the Italian-Japanese team, the native of Rome will therefore have shone at the start (2nd in 2020), before experiencing two much more complicated seasons behind (17th in 2021 and 19th in 2022). “I want to thank Franky for his hard work and dedication. (…) The Yamaha and Morbidelli partnership has led to excellent results, including an exceptional vice-champion title in 2020. It’s a shame that the past two years haven’t turned out the way we both wanted and hoped. (…) The team will continue to fully support Franky in every way possible to end our story in the best possible way, ”explained Lin Jarvis in a press release.
“Really looking forward to working with Rins”
In the process, Yamaha announced the successor of Morbidelli who will be Alex Rins. Currently injured in a leg following a fall at Mugello, during the sprint race of the Italian GP last June, the Spaniard will therefore leave Honda in a few months. “We are delighted that Alex is joining Yamaha and we welcome him. (…) We expect Alex to be a great asset. He has extensive experience as a MotoGP rider and is known to be a natural talent and a multiple MotoGP class winner, the Yamaha chief executive later said of Rins’ arrival this season. next. (…) We are confident that he should be fully recovered and up to snuff for the 2024 season. We are really looking forward to working with him and think he will work well with Fabio (Quartararo) and improve overall team performance. »
