The MotoGP sprint at the Australian Grand Prix on Phillip Island was canceled due to poor weather conditions on Sunday. The sprint was actually supposed to have taken place on Saturday, but due to the bad forecasts it was decided to change the program. A decision that was right.

“As expected, the conditions today weren’t the best. That’s why we had the Grand Prix yesterday. It certainly wasn’t an easy decision,” commented MotoGP sports director Carlos Ezpeleta on the cancellation. “Moto3 was able to run its race even if the conditions were difficult. In Moto2 there was a red flag because of some gusts of wind. The forecast showed that this would only get worse. We exchanged ideas with the teams and the majority agreed on the cancellation.”

The Frenchman Johann Zarco won the MotoGP on Saturday, it was his first victory. With second place, Zarco’s brand colleague Francesco Bagnaia had extended his lead over Jorge Martin (ESP), who only finished fifth due to incorrect tire choice, to 27 points. With this status we are now heading into the next race on October 29th in Thailand.

The Moto2 race had previously had to be stopped early on Sunday due to strong winds and rain. However, the race was classified following only eight laps. The victory went to the Italian Tony Arbolino, who came a little closer to the leader, Pedro Acosta from Spain, in the overall standings. In Moto3 the entire distance was ridden, in which the Turkish Deniz Öncü won on a KTM. The overall leader is the Spanish Honda driver Jaume Masia.
