MotoGP Friday at Jerez: Dani Pedrosa and KTM Riders Struggle with Crashes and RC16 Issues

2024-04-26 16:15:09

MotoGP Friday in Jerez was difficult for the KTM riders because, along with Brad Binder and Jack Miller, wildcard Dani Pedrosa also had to accept a crash. Problems with the RC16 made the job more difficult.

Dani Pedrosa ended his MotoGP career following the 2018 season following 13 years with the Repsol Honda factory team. The Spaniard, who has a total of 54 world championship victories to his name, then signed with KTM as a test rider. In 2021 and 2022 he returned for a total of three races as a WIldcard driver and even regularly contested podiums.

This weekend, the 38-year-old will be at the start once more on his Red Bull KTM at the Spanish GP at the Circuito de Jerez – Angel Nieto. But the start of the 4,423 km track in Andalusia was difficult for Pedrosa. After 7th place in free practice, 1st place This was followed by a quick drop and only 14th place in “MotoGP Practice”, which determines whether we go directly into Q2.

“I started the morning with a good feeling and it was a good first training session. “Unfortunately it changed in the followingnoon because I had a big problem with one of the bikes, it didn’t feel good,” the three-time world champion explained in an interview with SPEEDWEEK.com. “When I decided to switch back to the other bike at the break, it immediately went better. But unfortunately I crashed in turn 2 on the first lap. Maybe I risked too much on this lap, obviously the tire wasn’t ready yet.”

“Unfortunately, the bike was no longer usable, so I had to complete the training with the other bike,” continued the KTM rider. “We will now investigate what we need to do to make both bikes feel the same. We will then attack once more in Q1.”

Can Pedrosa ride freely in Jerez or will he have to test for KTM? “50:50,” replied the Spaniard, emphasizing: “We have a basis following the last tests, but we also have to try out a few things.”

“Unfortunately, because a bike didn’t go as expected that day, we mightn’t continue working on the test program,” said Pedrosa, who will tackle his 299th GP start on Sunday. “We concentrated fully on getting everything back to normal, but the followingnoon was truly forgettable.”

The KTM rider raced on Friday with the additional wing on the front fender of the KTM. How does this particular component perform on the track? Does it give the bike more stability on the straights and in the turns? “No, not really. It gives me more contact pressure in all areas, which means, for example, fewer wheelies. But it actually makes little difference when turning, says Pedrosa. “Compared to the last tests, you notice that there is more grip on the track and we are therefore faster.”
