“I have demanding students, I like to train myself, learn new things and pass them on to my students, as long as they accept me, but so far it has gone very well. Often teachers only ask to leave once they are 55 years old. Me, it’s not my case”, he exclaims.

“The students adopted me. They come with their wishes and questions and I try to answer them as best I can. I try to start from their needs as much as possible to guide my course. This keeps students motivated. IT lends itself well to this way of working: everyone uses IT tools and everyone has needs in this area. I have no teacher training but I try to find ways to pass on my knowledge to my students. My goal is to keep them motivated,” he continues.

Teacher sickness absence rates steadily rising

However, his first steps in a class were not idyllic. “I am an engineer by training. I worked as a computer scientist then I reoriented myself as a teacher. I started by teaching in high school then I found myself in a particularly difficult secondary school. I was teaching technical drawing to students who were not at all motivated, it was very discouraging,” he recalls.

“Then I taught in several establishments where I met motivated students who made me want to continue. Now I teach students who have dreams, goals and plans and I get along very well with them. In addition, the program is very interesting so I intend to continue teaching.”

Eloïse is making her first comeback as a teacher: “I have lots of ideas and projects!”

It is with sincere enthusiasm that a slight apprehension cannot tarnish that Eloise Russanowski, a freshly graduated teacher, made her very first return to school as a teacher this Monday morning in a municipal school in Ixelles. In his class, 16 pupils of third and fourth primary lively, curious and visibly, very happy to be back at school.

“I finished my studies as a teacher in June 2023 and started looking for a place in a school a month ago. I learned that I could work here in Ixelles a week ago so it’s all new for me. This is the first time I have my own class. I am very happy. I’ve always loved children”, explains the young teacher who has a head full of ideas and projects.

“Today, I will mainly get to know the students and for the rest of the year, I have lots of ideas and projects. I would like to be able to set up innovative projects and not an outdated pedagogy as we still see in some schools. I would like to be able to work in the form of workshops, encourage group work and draw inspiration from the school outside to regularly go out of class with the children to enrich learning”, she explains.

Like any young teacher, Eloïse hopes that she will succeed in establishing a serene atmosphere in her class.

“It’s a bit stressful. I hope that I will manage to set a framework and know how to impose myself. The students talk a lot, I hope I will be able to manage their behavior,” she says. “If the students are difficult, it’s up to the teachers to put things in place. It is up to the teachers to adapt to find solutions that suit the children. That’s how it is, that’s the job. Even if there are very significant differences in level within the same class, all students and their needs must be taken into account.”
