Motion for Resignation: Minister of Foreign Affairs and Prime Minister’s Credibility Questioned

2023-06-22 12:14:00

Following Hadja Lahbib’s hearing this Wednesday before the Chamber’s External Affairs Committee, at which De Croo was present, the opposition N-VA deputies tabled a motion calling for the resignation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs but also the Prime Minister. Their line of defense in the matter of granting visas to Iranian dignitaries did not satisfy the deputies, who pointed out the inconsistency of their speeches. However, the motion should not be voted on today.

Afternoon of heckling this Thursday the Chamber, the Prime Minister has difficulty in expressing himself.

3:19 p.m .: “The credibility of the minister is tarnished on the international scene”

Ahmed Laaouej (PS) once more points out the inconsistencies in the speeches of De Croo and Lahbib. “She went from a moral position to a real political position”.

“The minister’s credibility is tarnished on the international scene, but also the credibility of the entire government – through her,” he worries. “She must be able to tell us how she intends to resolve this problem of trust,” he said at the microphone of LN24.

3:15 p.m.: “A surreal passage”

”It was a surreal passage, a filmed theater. There is only De Croo to say that the incident is closed”, reacts François De Smet at the exit of the hemicycle. For the president of Challenge, the manistre Lahbib and more generally the government lost its credibility, in Belgium and abroad.

3:03 p.m .: “Hadja Lahbib will not resign”

“Hadja Lahbib will not resign, she has not committed any fault”, reacts to the exit of the Chamber the president of the MR, Georges-Louis Bouchez. “She is not behind the coming of the mayor of Tehran, she respected the procedure”.

3 p.m.: Questions on this subject are now closed

2:59 p.m .: The foreigners’ office would have expressed reluctance

According to the documents provided by Hadja Lahbib today, the foreigners’ office would have expressed reservations regarding the arrival of the mayor of Tehran.

2:50 p.m.: “You can invite someone without legitimizing them”

”Mr. De Roover is suddenly interested in the international image of Belgium. Usually you just smear our country,” retorts De Croo, before pausing. “You don’t listen to what I say,” he said in the face of the agitation of the deputies.

“You can invite someone without legitimizing them,” he continues.

2:46 p.m .: “Restore the credibility of our country internationally”, chants N-VA deputy Peter De Roover

2:42 p.m .: “You no longer have a majority”

“No one believes the incident is closed. You no longer have a majority, everyone is waiting for you to make a strong gesture”, replies François De Smet in the process.

2:37 p.m .: “This incident is closed”, De Croo refuses to answer questions

Following questions from MEPs on confidence in the government, Alexander De Croo took the floor following a moment of agitation. “If the House is the place of freedom of expression, I hear the vocabulary of the PTB and this freedom of expression is not beautiful. Freedom of expression matters but there is a way to say it”, tackles the Prime Minister to the address of the PTB.

I’m not saying yesterday’s topic isn’t important, but aren’t there other topics?” asks the Prime Minister, who refuses to answer questions. “This incident is closed”, insists De Croo. “The priorities of this government are job protection, growth, pension reform, nuclear… These are the questions that should be asked here for what the country is moving forward”.

2:30 p.m.: “What are you going to do, Prime Minister, to restore confidence in this government?”

François De Smet, the president of Défi begins by speaking. The role of ministers is to play politics, that is to say to respect the coherence of a country in its line, he underlines. “What are you going to do Mr. Prime Minister to restore confidence in this government?” he asks.
