Three Viennese professional firefighters slightly injured

Vienna (OTS/RK) On Monday followingnoon at 1:15 p.m. an emergency call was received in the Vienna Fire Department’s communications center. A fire broke out in a building on Leopold-Ferstl-Gasse. Thanks to the proximity of the site to the Am Spitz fire station, the first firefighters were able to start fighting the fire just a few minutes following receiving the report on site. The stairwell was already thick with smoke and a 42-year-old mother and her 10-month-old son were trapped in the smoke-filled elevator car. The two were immediately rescued from the elevator and taken to a safe area. There both had to be resuscitated by professional fire brigade and professional rescue services. After receiving emergency medical treatment, they were transported away in two rescue helicopters. During the rescue operation, three firefighters suffered smoke poisoning and were treated on site by the Vienna professional rescue service. Other firefighters were able to extinguish the fire using breathing apparatus. Dozens of firefighters with over ten emergency vehicles, various teams from Vienna’s professional rescue service and two helicopters were involved in the operation.
