President Macky Sall said that “there are no political detainees in Senegal” in a statement on Saturday. However, Seydi Gassama, executive director of Amnesty International Senegal, responded quickly by indicating that “the people who are in prison all belong to the same political party”.

In a tweet, Mr Gassama explained that “most of the people who are in prison are not people who burned, looted or robbed” and that they were “just exercising rights guaranteed by the Constitution and international treaties”. .

In another tweet, the representative of Amnesty International Senegal stressed that these prisoners “all belong to the same political party or are journalists and activists known to be close to this political party”. He then called for their release, writing that “all must be released”.
