More than four out of five merchants (85%) will begin the winter sales, scheduled for January 3 to 31, with a 30% discount due to large stocks, the Neutral Union for Independents (SNI) reported on Friday. Their proportion has increased compared to last year (81%). At one in five retailers (22%), mainly large chains, reductions will even reach 50%.
These markdowns are explained by large stocks, according to the survey by the organization for the defense of independents and SMEs. Some 60% of retailers say they still have at least 40% of their stock as the 2024 winter sales approach.
Retailers surveyed by the SNI, however, seem slightly more optimistic than last year. “Only” 11% anticipate a drop in turnover of at least 20%, while they were 23% at the end of 2022. The last winter sales, however, were not a great success, recalls the organization .
Despite a “deep attachment” among retailers to the winter sales, the union also notes that some are demanding change. Nearly half of retailers (45%) would welcome a postponement of winter sales until February.
