ZDF itself can hardly believe it: “In fact, most of the ZDF community eat vegetarian at Christmas. Would you have thought so?
No, most would answer, we wouldn’t have. And should be right regarding that.
Because: ZDF apparently misunderstood its own survey on Christmas dinner!
That’s what it’s regarding: On Instagram, ZDF asked in a story that has since disappeared what they eat at Christmas. Shortly therefollowing, the non-representative result was published in a separate Instagram post.
It says: “This is served in Germany at Christmas”. The most popular answers are listed below. “Vegetarian” comes in first, followed by potato salad and sausage, raclette, roast goose, roulades and duck.
But does that mean that “most” Christmas menus are vegetarian?
The fact is: The bar behind the answer option shows how many people voted for a dish. The longer the bar, the more people voted for the dish.
If you compare the bars with each other, it quickly becomes clear: Overall, significantly more people voted for dishes containing meat (at least six out of ten) than for the “vegetarian” option.
A user comments on the ZDF contribution as follows: “The sum of all non-vegetarian answers is significantly larger than vegetarian => significantly more non-vegetarian food, so your statement is wrong!”
Another user writes: “So nine non-vegetarian dishes added up compared to a flat-rate category are significantly more for me!”
This survey was neither fish nor meat – just a glitch.
After the BILD report, ZDF commented on Instagram and spoke of a “regrettable and annoying mistake”. The number of meat dishes has “a significantly larger share” than the vegetarian option.
Well then: Bon appetit!
