Mosquito Control Operation at Niort Station to Prevent Spread of Arboviruses

The regional health agency announces a mosquito control operation in Niort station on the night of Monday October 9 to Tuesday October 10. This decision follows the discovery of a case of disease transmitted by the tiger mosquito.

It was an “imported case of arbovirus” which determined the regional health agency to launch this mosquito control operation. The person passed through Niort station on their return from an overseas community and tested positive for one of the diseases referred to as arbovirosis. These are diseases transmitted by tiger mosquitoes such as dengue, chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever.

We do not know what illness the infected person suffers from, but the ARS explains in its press release: “In accordance with the national anti-dissemination plan for chikungunya, dengue and Zika, the implementation A one-off mosquito control operation is therefore necessary. The goal is to eliminate mosquitoes tigers present in places frequented by these patients, in order to avoid any risk of spreading the virus in the event that they were contaminated by biting these people.”

But it is also specified “that no local circulation of arbovirus is currently evidenced by epidemiological surveillance carried out by the ARS and Santé Publique France.”

Concretely, mosquito control will take place during the night from Monday to Tuesday. A specialized company will carry out “spraying insecticide from the public highway. If If necessary, more targeted treatments carried out on foot will be carried out. The product used during these treatments is sprayed at one gram per hectare, which is a very low dosage.” The regional health agency specifies that it is the same active substance as that used in commercially purchased mosquito repellent products.

Niort station will therefore be closed from 10 p.m. on Monday October 9 until 7 a.m. on Tuesday the 8th.
