The toddler, from the Big Rivers region, died from Murray Valley encephalitis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease that is mainly transmitted by mosquitoes.
Northern Territory Health said the death was one of two recent cases of Murray Valley encephalitis in the region, both involving young children.
Four cases of Murray valley encephalitis have been recorded in the Northern Territory’s high region (Top End) this year.
The death and rise in cases has prompted local health authorities to issue a warning to Northern Territory residents and visitors to protect themselves and their children from mosquitoes.
Murray Valley encephalitis can be fatal in regarding 30% of cases.
“Symptoms of Murray valley encephalitis include severe headache, high fever, lethargy, seizures (especially in young children), and in some cases the disease can progress to confusion, coma, permanent brain damage or death.”
The only way to prevent this disease is to avoid mosquito bites.
Northern Territory health authorities are urging people to use protective insect repellent, wear protective clothing and avoid outdoor activities in densely vegetated areas at dusk, dawn and at night.
It is also recommended to use mosquito coils, lanterns or insect repellent spray in outdoor locations, and to install mosquito nets on prams and prams.
