Moselle: a nurse’s breast cancer recognized as an occupational disease

At 62, Martine* has just won her case. This nurse, at the Sarreguemines Hospital Center (Moselle), now retired, obtained last January the recognition of her breast cancer as an occupational disease. The announcement was made a few days ago by the CFDT miners in the region who had been alerted to his illness and his career.

“Martine worked in the Sarregueminois cardiology and gynecology departments from 1981 to 2009. In her case, night work is the main risk factor. A nurse for twenty-eight years, she recorded 873 nights, or at least one per week”explains this Monday the CFDT Minors of Lorraine to TF1info. “This decreases the secretion of melatonin, an anti-carcinogen, the employees being exposed to strong light. In 2009, she was treated for her breast cancer. It has just been proven that ‘her shift work’ nurse was able to contribute to the emergence of breast cancer’, as the report of the medical expert points out. This is a first and, for us as for her, it is a victory!”

The union hopes that this decision rendered by the administrative tribunal and the judicial tribunal will soon be able to set a precedent.
