As symbolic as the name of the ship was, the news of its sinking was just as triumphant in Kyiv. On Friday night, the Kremlin had to admit that the Moskva, Russia’s flag and command ship since 1983, had sunk. While Ukraine reports that its army has sunk the Russian cruiser, Moscow describes the sinking as an accident: a fire on board caused ammunition to explode. Nothing was initially known about the fate of the approximately 500 sailors who were stationed on the warship. Moscow is now threatening new attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.
