Moscow must seek the “disappearance” of Ukraine and NATO 2024-07-14 00:27:45

In a social media post, Medvedev cited in English the NATO declaration from the NATO summit in Washington this week: “We will continue to support (Ukraine) in this irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including of joining NATO”.

Medvedev continued in Russian: “The conclusion is obvious. We must do everything so that Ukraine’s ‘irreversible path’ to NATO ends either with its disappearance or with the disappearance of NATO. Or even better – with the disappearance of both.”

Medvedev, who during his presidency – from 2008 to 2012 – was considered a pro-Western modernizer, has completely changed his stance and since the start of the war has been one of the most ardent supporters of the invasion of Ukraine.

In particular, he has repeatedly warned the US and its allies that Kiev’s equipment might lead to a “nuclear apocalypse”.

Any decision to use Russian nuclear weapons would rest with President Vladimir Putin. But diplomats say the views of Medvedev, who is vice-chairman of Russia’s security council, are a sign of the Kremlin’s belligerent attitude, which sees the war as an existential battle with the West.
