Morten Stig Christensen has died of a sudden cardiac arrest

He is survived by his wife Anne Engdal Stig Christensen, five children and several grandchildren.

– Today I have lost the great love of my life, my life partner, my support, and Morten’s five children have lost their fantastic father.

– Morten is no longer here, and it is completely incomprehensible. We ask for peace of mind to understand our very sudden and completely unreasonable loss of a loving husband and father, writes Anne Engdal Christensen in an email.

Morten Stig Christensen became known as a handball player. He made his debut in the national team as a 17-year-old and achieved 190 international matches. He appeared at club level for MK 31 in Copenhagen and subsequently for SAGA, Gladsaxe HG, Stavanger and Tarup-Paarup IF.

He was at three Olympic finals, including in Los Angeles in 1984, where he was one of the so-called candy boys who played in red and white stripes.

Morten Stig Christensen trained as a primary school teacher and made a name for himself by publicly fighting for peace and against nuclear power during his sports career.

He also starred in the 1987 film Friends Forever, which was about youth and homosexuality.

After the active career, he became a studio host on TV 2 and later advanced to sports manager on the TV channel.

In June 2007, he became general secretary and director of Danish Handball, and in 2021 he was appointed chairman of the handball association instead of Per Bertelsen.

He thus has a large share in the sporting and organizational progress that handball has experienced in recent years.

– We are deeply saddened by the loss of Morten. He was passionate about association life and spreading handball, so that the sport and the community could make a difference for people of all ages and shapes.

– Our warmest thoughts and condolences go to Morten’s family, says Heino Knudsen, managing director of Danish Handball on the association’s website.
